The Shirley Warren Curriculum Intent

When designing our curriculum we have taken into account the specific and diverse needs of our children. Our curriculum puts the child at the centre of our caring school, where positive relationships, based on mutual trust and respect are at the heart of everything we do. 

We want to offer an ambitious, cohesive curriculum that takes account of the legal requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and the Primary National Curriculum but is also designed to give all learners the knowledge, skills and cultural capital they need for lifelong learning. 

The underlying principles of our curriculum are:

We are currently designing Curriculum projects which stem from the needs of the children and taking into account the above principles. When designing these projects, we are aiming to construct a curriculum that builds on knowledge so that children can "know more, remember more and understand more" (Ofsted School Inspection Update 2019). 

We aim to have fully immersive, integrated topics which use rich quality texts as the curriculum topic drivers. We do not force links however, and in some cases the topics are led by the subject with texts leading discreet writing and reading lessons.

Curriculum Projects Overview

When choosing topics, we aim to ensure that the skills taught are progressive in nature and that there is coverage of all curriculum areas in accordance with the National Curriculum.

We also aim to ensure that knowledge earned is built upon over time. We are developing Knowledge Organisers (which we are calling Learning Journeys) for each topic which will identify key knowledge, prior learning and next learning.

The main purpose of the curriculum is to increase the contents of long term memory (Dylan Wiliam 2020).
