Happenings in Year 5
It’s hard to believe that we have already been back at school for five weeks! Year 5 have made a fantastic start to the new school year and we have been delighted with how well the children are taking to their new year group and classes.
In English, the children have been writing narratives based in a setting of the children’s choice. It has been lovely to start getting to know them through creative imaginations! Whilst writing the narratives, we have been working on their use of descriptive language, including expanded noun phrases, similes and personification, to make their descriptions more exciting. Now that we are moving into our new poetry topic, Year 5 have been working hard to publish our work into books that we can display within our classrooms.
In Maths, we have made a wonderful start by exploring place value. We have been developing their understanding of numbers, including working with powers of 10, partitioning numbers and understanding the value of each digit. The children have enjoyed challenging themselves and explaining their mathematical thinking. We have now moved on to our new topic of addition and subtraction, where we are developing our written methods and applying our skills to solve increasingly challenging problems.
There is lots more to look forward to over the coming weeks and we are excited to see what Year 5 will achieve as the year continues. Well done Year 5 on such a positive start!
